Adoption as an Option
In my previous article I have placed emphasis on the advantages of breeders over pet shops but if you have any rescues or shelters in your area which take on reptiles I’d advise others to opt for adoption over any other method of purchasing any animal. Unfortunately many reptiles are currently being brought to shelter and rescue groups as they become too big for their owners, too difficult to care for or the owners simply lose interest. Sadly many of these animals are euthanised as the rescues are over-saturated and a home cannot be found for them. For this reason it is recommended to give an animal a second chance by adoption rather than purchasing, this is the best method to obtain any animal.
You must research the species before getting it as you should never buy any animal without knowing how to care for it first. Never impulse buy as your lack of knowledge may do the animal more harm than good, a common problem in the reptile trade. One of the biggest threats to reptiles is the owners’ lack of knowledge causing them to unintentionally kill the animal because they do not know enough about the species they’re dealing with.
Prepare yourself for the commitment needed to care for the animal - arming yourself with correct knowledge is crucial for raising and caring for an animal successfully. Consider if a reptile is appropriate for you first before adopting.
