Goitrogens
Goitrogens cause an enlargement of the thyroid gland, and contribute to the development of goitre (swelling of the neck) by blocking iodine absorption. Since thyroid hormones play an important part in the control of body metabolism their deficiency results in reduced growth and reproductive performance. They are found in many foods, such as legumes (e.g. soybean and groundnut), strawberries, peaches, radishes, brassicas (cabbages, broccoli, and all of the greens- turnip, radish, mustard, collards, etc). A varied diet can prevent any nutritional issue, as well as careful and moderate feeding of foods high in goitrogens.
